अदीबो ! ठोस धरती की सतह पर लौट भी आओ
मुअम्मे के सिवा क्या है फ़लक़ के चाँद-तारों में

रहे मुफ़लिस गुज़रते बे-यक़ीनी के तजरबे से
बदल देंगे ये इन महलों की रंगीनी मज़ारों में

कहीं पर भुखमरी की धूप तीखी हो गई शायद
जो है संगीन के साये की चर्चा इश्तहारों में.

हिन्दी भाषी होने के नाते आज के दिन हमें अपनी भाषा पर गर्व करना सिखाया गया है, मगर सच्चाई यह है कि स्वातंत्रोत्तर काल में जैसे-जैसे हिन्दी आन्दोलन फलता-फूलता पल्लवित होता गया है, वैसे-वैसे देश में हिन्दी की खटिया-खड़ी होती देखी गई है। कुछ तो देश के कर्ता-धर्ताओं ने उसे गर्व करने लायक नहीं छोड़ा, रही-सही कसर हम जैसे सैकड़ों लिख्खाड़ पूरी कर रहे हैं जिन्हें अपने शिक्षणकाल में हिन्दी के पर्चे में कभी तैतीस से ज़्यादा अंक नसीब नहीं हुए। दरअसल वस्तुस्थिति तो तैतीस अंक प्राप्त करने लायक भी नहीं थी परन्तु मास्टरनियों की रहमदिली और हिन्दी के प्रति ‘हिन्दी ही तो है, क्या फर्क पड़ता है’ के उदारता भाव के कारण हमारा भविष्य वर्ष-प्रतिवर्ष सुरक्षित होता चला गया, और अब हम हिन्दी के भविष्य का ‘बिस्तर गोल’ करने में सक्रिय सहयोग देकर ‘खटिया खड़ी बिस्तर गोल’ वाला चालू मुहावरा चरितार्थ करने में लगे हुए हैं।

हिन्दी का बंटाधार करने वालों में प्रायमरी, मिडिल स्कूल के क्रीड़ा, संगीत व चित्रकला मास्टरों से लेकर बड़े-बडे़ सूरमा भाषा विशेषज्ञों का भी सश्रम योगदान रहा है। हिन्दी फिल्म-टी.वी. वाले विद्वजनों ने भी बहती गंगा में हाथ धोकर हिन्दी की ‘वाट’ लगाने में कोई कसर नहीं छोड़ी है। फिल्म वालों ने इस श्रमसाध्य कार्य के लिए अवार्ड हासिल किए तो क्रीड़ा-संगीत-चित्रकला शिक्षकों ने, जो अक्सर हिन्दी शिक्षकों के टोटे में जबरदस्ती हिन्दी पढ़वाने के उपयोग में आते हैं, हिन्दी का क्रियाकर्म बाकायदा तनखा लेकर किया, साथ में इंक्रीमेंट भी लिए। वे बेचारे पढ़ाई के बोझ से घबराकर प्रदर्शनकारी कलाओं की शरण में पहुँचे होते हैं, उन्हें फिर घर में होमवर्क से मगजमारी के बाद बच्चों को हिन्दी पढ़ाने की बेगारी करना पड़ती है, नतीजतन हिन्दी का सत्यानाश करने वाली विदूषी पीढ़ी जन्म लेती है, कालान्तर में मौका पड़ने पर जिसे हिन्दी में अर्जी लिखना भी नहीं आता, जिसकी ज़रूरत हमारे देश में कदम-कदम पर पड़ती है।

देश के भाषा विशेषज्ञों का तो दुनिया में कोई सानी ही नहीं है। उन्होंने हमेशा चौकस रहते हुए इस बात का ध्यान रखा कि कैसे हिन्दी को ना समझ में आने वाली क्लिष्टतम भाषा बनाए रखा जा सके ताकि लोग अपनी राष्ट्र भाषा को जन्म-जन्मान्तर तक समझ ही ना पाएँ और इससे बिदककर अंग्रेजी की शरण में जा खडे़ हों या गाली- गलौच की सुप्रचलित भाषा का आदान-प्रदान कर अभिव्यक्ति की अपनी समस्या खुद ही सुलझा लें, भूलकर भी हिन्दी के दरवाज़े पर आकर खड़े ना हों।

फिल्म वालों ने तो गज़ब ही कर डाला। पब्लिक के मुँह में ऐसी छिछोरी भाषा परोस दी कि हिन्दी का भूत दशकों से जान बचाता भागता फिर रहा है। इन फिल्मचियों ने ‘अख्खे’ देश को अनोखी बम्बइया भाषा में पिरो कर रख दिया है। इस मामले में कश्मीर से लेकर कन्याकुमारी तक वास्तव में भारत एक है। गुजरात से लेकर बंगाल तक भारत के एक होने का मतलब भी यही है कि भले ही देश के हर कोने में स्थानीय भाषा का बोलबाला और हिन्दी का मुँह काला हो मगर – ‘सरकाई लो खटिया जाड़ा लगे’ का रचनात्मक अर्थ गली-गली में लोग बखूबी जानते हैं। जन-गण-मन अधिनायक से ज्यादा आरेला ए, जारेला ए, खारेला ए, पीरेला ए, खाली-पीली बोम मारेला ए जैसी उच्चकोटि की शब्दावली देश के हर गली-कूचे में आसानी से समझ ली जाती है। हमारे मध्यप्रदेश में भी आरिया हे, जारिया हे किस्म की हिन्दी का प्रचलन है, इसमें माँ-बहनों से निकटतम गुप्त संबंधों की खुली चर्चा साथ में और नत्थी कर हिन्दी की प्रतिष्ठा में अरसे से चार चाँद ठोके जा रहे हैं।

हिन्दी आन्दोलन चल रहा है, चल रहा है, चलता चला जा रहा है, मगर पान-ठेलों, चौक-चौराहों, टी.वी., सिनेमा, सांस्कृतिक केन्द्रों, सरकारी गैर सरकारी दफ्तरों से लेकर संसद तक रोजाना इस अबला की अस्मत तार-तार होती रहती है। साल का एक पखवाड़ा मुकर्रर है, बीच बाज़ार में इसे घायल पड़ा देखकर मातमपुर्सी करने के लिए। जिसे मर्ज़ी हो मातमपुर्सी करे या फिर चाहे तो नजरें बचा कर निकल जाए।

                               अब मै सूरज को नही डूबने दूंगा।

                               घबराओ मत

                               मै क्षितिज पर जा रहा हूँ।

                               सूरज ठीक जब पहाडी से लुढकने लगेगा

                               मै कंधे अडा दूंगा

                               देखना वह वहीं ठहरा होगा।

                                

                               अब मै सूरज को नही डूबने दूंगा।

                               मैने सुना है उसके रथ मे तुम हो

                               तुम्हे मै उतार लाना चाहता हूं

                               तुम जो स्वाधीनता की प्रतिमा हो

‘YOUR’ ISLAM VERSUS ‘OUR’ ISLAM

Mumbai’s premier Urdu newspaper, Inquilab, in its today/Sunday edition carries an article written by one of its more popular writers, Hasan Kamal, under the title: Your Islam and our Islam. The title itself is meant to create mischief. Hasan Kamal, with other Marxists like Javed Akhtar and Javed Anand, had formed a paper organisation called Muslim for Social Democracy, has been an editor of URDU BLITZ, for decades and had followed his Leftist mission with the approval of the owner of BLITZ, the late R. K. Karanjia, who in his heyday, moved in the circle of world socialist leadership, like Egyptian leader, Gamal Abdel Nasser, among others. Of the trio in MSD, both Javed Akhtar and Javed Anand are professed agnostics, if not atheist and the group has now taken up the noble mission of projecting their version of Islam as the true Islam. Can there be any more flagrant travesty of fact, that those, whose professed beliefs are against Islam, should now have the audacity to become the votaries of ‘true’ Islam of their own concoction. Naturally the headline to the article starts sowing differences from the very outset, among the Muslim community in India. In fact, they follow the world-wide trend to sow divisions in Islamic polity on behalf of the world’s Zionist controlled US and are completely subservient to ideas put out by others and paddle them as their own.

The articles deals with the news, that Taliban have recently threatened girls to abide by Islamic strictures and abstain from going to ’schools’.

Three points have to be considered in this respect. US has turned against Taliban as their leader Mullah Umar had refused to allow US oil giant UNOCAL to lay pipeline across Afghanistan as they differed on various terms. US then decided to overthrow Taliban hold on Afghanistan and start world wide propaganda against them as belonging to conservative brand of Islam that was against women in particular. The war over territory now turned a war on the ideology and practice of Islam in full conformity with the world wide war on terror or effectively a war on Islam. Taliban overnight turned into villains. Those who oppose Taliban, should first clear their own bona fides, if they are not following the western propaganda against Islam and not trying to reform Islam while in fact, working against Islam.

Taliban are in bad books with the Left, as they were in the same league as other Islamic Jihadists, who had overthrown Soviet Union forces that had occupied Afghanistan. That hurt still lingers and that is the main reason why the leftist find it convenient to join US propaganda to make Taliban the common enemy of the Western imperialists and as well as the Fundamentalist Marxists still embedded in woodworks around the world and waiting for their day in the daylight once again.

The recent advances made by Taliban in its confrontation with the occupied forces of US and NATO, with India merely participating as a contractor, possibly like Halliburton and KBR, the two private contractors that reaped billions of dollars through fictitious account fabrications, that might now attract Justice department scrutiny, when Obama takes over, — justifiably rang alarm bells in Indian security establishments. The Indian media without the intellect or the moral fiber to think on its own are sheepishly following US propaganda line against Taliban.

Leftist among the media are most vocal about Taliban treatment of women, as liberation of women has been their most potent instrument of change in society. They hardly bother to mention that the Soviet Union and its satellite states had rendered practically half of their womenfolk into legalized prostitution. Even today, a good decade and half after the breakup of Communist Soviet Union, the bulk of women trafficking in the world is centered on the devastated lands of the communist regimes. If Hasan Kamal wants his Islam to make that an ideal for Muslims to follow, he should at least not be economical with the full facts of the liberation of women according to Soviet model.

It is a fact that Taliban had been openly fighting to preserve the old customs within Islamic fold that were more cultural than religious.

However, it can be argued that Taliban had come out most vocally against the so-called women’s liberation, as their main objective was to stop the subversion and disintegration of their society that had set in during the few years of Communist rule in Afghanistan.

Any new broom sweeps with new vigour. There is no reason to believe that over the time, Taliban would not have followed other Muslim nations and started educating their womenfolk, within the norms of the societal parameters that had kept Afghanistan identity alive. However, it would have been their free choice, not imposition from occupying forces, either of the Communist or Western kind.

Those who had visited Afghanistan during communist rule could not deny that in the name of liberation of girl-child, the urban areas under communist state’s jurisdiction, widespread womanizing and prostitution had come to be regarded as the new dawn of civilisation.

Afghanistan economy had not (and still has not) expanded enough to give employment opportunities to the educated womenfolk and when they broke away from their family moorings, they had to support themselves through means fair or foul. So merely educating the masses, without any commitment for their absorption in new decent societal standards that fits Islamic traditions, was not a progressive but a very destructive ‘revolution’. And the beauty of this ‘modernization’ was that it was supported by both sides fighting for paramountcy in Afghanistan, the Marxist and the capitalist imperialists.

In this context, Taliban are fulfilling the role of liberators of their country, from the clutches of foreign hegemonists.

Hasan Kamal wrote off his column, without even bothering to check if Taliban had ever issued any such statement and what is the worth of any such pronunciation. For him, it is frivolous to even think otherwise, as long as fits their agenda of sowing divisions in Muslim community and dividing ‘their’ Islam from ‘our’ Islam.. After all the US and its Jewish thank tanks have done a thorough brain wash of the whole world and it is preposterous to expect that some of our writers, would not fall prey to the imperialist line against Islam and Muslims. Samuel Huntington is dead, but not his ideas about the ‘clash of civilisation’. It is for us to know, which side we belong and not to get distracted from minor and temporary set-backs.

Mumbai’s great spirit will help city rise above terror

attacks

The city’s cosmopolitan camaraderie allows people of all faiths to live cheek by jowl

 India and Indians – Mumbai and Mumbaikars, in particular – have a remarkable capacity to rebound from tragedies.

They have done so repeatedly, after horrendous domestic sectarian killings and bombings, especially in Mumbai in 1993, 2003 and 2006.

It’s not just kismet, the fatalism shared by Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Sikhs and others alike. No, it’s a far greater force, the will to welcome the dawn of every day as yet another opportunity to live life. It’s an optimism born of beating the incredible odds of India.

But this time, one can’t be so sure that India will mourn and move on. The latest terrorist attack is not just more brazen, better planned and highly co-ordinated than the previous ones. It has the international imprint of bombings in Islamabad, Bali, Jakarta and other places.

The agony is personal. In the 1960s, I lived in the area now under siege, not far from the Taj Hotel where I took tea and dined at prices I could ill-afford, and met the then Canadian high commissioner, Roland Michener, who suggested, “young men like you should go to Canada,” advice ignored with youthful arrogance and acted on only reluctantly years later.

The area has a rich past and a richer present.

Yards from where the majestic Taj overlooks the Arabian Sea is the port where the British colonials came in the 16th century and departed in 1947, and whence the British traded opium to China. It is where the grand Gateway of India, begun in 1911 to mark the visit of King George V, still stands.

This is the district where Rudyard Kipling was born and where the maharajas and maharanis from British India’s 556 states came to party at the Taj in “little London,” which boasted the most Gothic buildings outside of Victorian England.

Post-colonial Bombay married old money with new. It became a bigger financial hub, with corporate headquarters and the gold and diamond bazaar, along with the dream factory called Bollywood and also cricket.

The area around the Taj – one of the most expensive pieces of real estate in the world but which retained its old neighbourhoods, such as Colaba, home to Zoroastrians – formed the backdrop of Canadian author Rohinton Mistry’s novels, especially the Dickensian A Fine Balance.

But Mumbai has remained a safe city, despite its periodic bouts of political or sectarian violence and the mayhem of the Mafia. The city retains its cosmopolitan camaraderie and egalitarianism. The smell from Colaba’s fish market gets into the nostrils of paupers and billionaires alike.

People of all faiths live cheek by jowl. The small Jewish community has rarely, if ever, been targeted before. The apartment I used to live in was shared by Muslims, Hindus and a Jewish woman.

The sacred and the profane coexist. Red light districts thrive near temples and mosques. The streets are shared by hookers and priests. There is no room for NIMBY-ism.

Terrorism is not new to the subcontinent.

After living in relative peace for centuries, Indians were engulfed in sectarian killings with the 1947 creation of Muslim Pakistan and largely Hindu but secular India. In the cross-border stampede of nearly 12 million, almost a million were massacred.

There have been repeated sectarian riots since, Muslims being the main victims. Still, an easy peace prevailed.

Then came 1992, when the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party desecrated an obscure mosque in a place called Ayodhya in an attempt to turn it into a temple. That led to intercommunal killing of more than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims.

In retaliation, Mumbai’s stock exchange and other locales were bombed, killing 260 and injuring hundreds. India blamed crime syndicates in the Bollywood underworld, and said that the Muslim perpetrators had found refuge in Pakistan.

The aftershocks of Ayodhya were felt in 2002 in the state of Gujarat, north of Mumbai. Nearly 2,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed and tens of thousands made homeless. Police in the BJP-run state were accused of complicity.

Since then, there have been many bombings, most attributed to Muslim extremists. In the last three years alone, Muslims have been blamed for at least 700 killings.

Last month, there was a new twist: Christian-Hindu savagery by Maoists and Hindu extremists in the eastern state of Orissa. More than a dozen people were killed, and a girl escaped being burned alive, her face looking no different than that of the Afghan girl in the recent acid attack by the Taliban.

This month, police unearthed an extremist Hindu terrorist cell following the bombing of a Muslim area near Mumbai.

It is anybody’s guess who or what caused the Mumbai attack. It’s possible that Pakistani militants were involved. Or it may have been revenge for the ongoing persecution of India’s Muslims. Or, as one of the terrorists indicated, it was about Kashmir, the border Muslim-majority state, over which India and Pakistan have fought two wars, and where there has been recent unrest.

What we do know is this:

It used to be said – as a compliment to Indian democracy, the world’s largest – that there wasn’t one Al Qaeda or Al Qaeda-like member among that nation’s 150 million Muslims. We can put that bit of self-delusion to rest.

There’s much hand-wringing that Mumbai police and security personnel didn’t have a clue about what has just transpired. The FBI didn’t either about 9/11.

The attack is bound to turn India’s high-profile hotels and buildings into fortresses. The easy accessibility of public spaces and the openness of people to each other, so characteristic of Mumbai, would change.

India’s $10 billion a year tourism industry, with 4 million visitors, may suffer a temporary setback.

But India is at such a stage of economic and political development that terrorists are unlikely to hold it back for long. Its $1.2 trillion economy, feeling the pinch of global recession, is still forecast to grow by more than 7 per cent.

India’s greatest strength, though, lies in the indomitable spirit of its people, of all faiths. The humanity of the overwhelming majority should continue to triumph over the periodic savagery of some of its extremists. One hopes and prays so.

यहाँ कोकिला नहीं, काग हैं, शोर मचाते,
काले काले कीट, भ्रमर का भ्रम उपजाते।

कलियाँ भी अधखिली, मिली हैं कंटक-कुल से,
वे पौधे, व पुष्प शुष्क हैं अथवा झुलसे।

परिमल-हीन पराग दाग सा बना पड़ा है,
हा! यह प्यारा बाग खून से सना पड़ा है।

ओ, प्रिय ऋतुराज! किन्तु धीरे से आना,
यह है शोक-स्थान यहाँ मत शोर मचाना।

वायु चले, पर मंद चाल से उसे चलाना,
दुःख की आहें संग उड़ा कर मत ले जाना।

कोकिल गावें, किन्तु राग रोने का गावें,
भ्रमर करें गुंजार कष्ट की कथा सुनावें।

लाना संग में पुष्प, न हों वे अधिक सजीले,
तो सुगंध भी मंद, ओस से कुछ कुछ गीले।

किन्तु न तुम उपहार भाव आ कर दिखलाना,
स्मृति में पूजा हेतु यहाँ थोड़े बिखराना।

कोमल बालक मरे यहाँ गोली खा कर,
कलियाँ उनके लिये गिराना थोड़ी ला कर।

आशाओं से भरे हृदय भी छिन्न हुए हैं,
अपने प्रिय परिवार देश से भिन्न हुए हैं।

कुछ कलियाँ अधखिली यहाँ इसलिए चढ़ाना,
कर के उनकी याद अश्रु के ओस बहाना।

तड़प तड़प कर वृद्ध मरे हैं गोली खा कर,
शुष्क पुष्प कुछ वहाँ गिरा देना तुम जा कर।

यह सब करना, किन्तु यहाँ मत शोर मचाना,
यह है शोक-स्थान बहुत धीरे से आना।

1-     कल मेंने रात्रिको देखा कि फरिश्तोंने मयखाना का दरवाज़ा खटखटाया,आदमीकी मट्टीको गुंधा और ईससे पयमाना बनाया.

2-     आलमे मल्कुत(उपरका विश्व)के पाकदामनी के राज़ में हरममें(पवित्र घर) बसने वालों ने मुझ मुसाफिर को मस्ताना शराब दे दी.

3-     खुदाका शुक्र है कि मुझमें और उसमें सुल्ह हो गई.सुफीयोंने रक्स(नाच) करते हुए शुकराना(आभार) का सागर पिया.

4-     बहतर मिल्लतों(क़ोमों) के ईख्तिलाफ(विरोधाभास)को मअज़ुर समजे.क्युं कि उन्होंने हकीकत नहीं देखी.अफसाना के राह चल पडे.

5-     आसमान अमानतका बोझ उठा नहीं सका.मुझ दीवाने के नाम फाल का कुर्रा(चीठ्ठी) निकाल दिया.

 

6-     ईश्कके नुकतेने गोशे नशीनेके( कोठरीमे बंद बेठे हुए) दिलको खुं कर दिया, एस तिल की तरह जो  उन्होंने माशुकों के गालपर लगा दिया.

7-     हम तकब्बुर(मिथ्याभिमान)को सोखियांनोके होते  हुए रास्तेसे क्युं न भटके, जब कि उन्होंने खाक से बने हुए आदमका एक दाने की बज़ह से रास्ता बंध कर दिया.

8-     आग वो नहीं जिसके शोले पर शमां मुस्कराए,आग वो है जो उनहोने परवाने के खिरमन(घर)को लगा दी.

9-     खयालातके रुख से हाफिज़(कविका नाम) की तरहा किसीने नकाब नहीं उठाया, जबसे सुखन(शब्द) की दुल्हनोकी झुल्फ में उन्होने कंघी की है.

निदा फ़ाज़ली : आसाँ नहीं ब्रेख्त बनना (Nida Fazli)

हक गोईका हामी है,नालां है सब उस से ,आयना हरामी है

निदा फाजली को आप हिन्दुस्तान का बर्तोल्त ब्रेख्त कह सकते हैं। वही बागियाना तेवर, इंसानियत के प्रति वही अटूट प्रतिबद्धता, वही पुरस्कारों को ठोकर मारना और वही सत्ता प्रतिष्ठानों से झगड़ा मोल लेने की आदत। सांप्रदायिकता और उग्र राष्ट्रवाद के खिलाफ भी निदा के विचार ब्रेख्त से मिलते-जुलते हैं और विभिन्ना विधाओं में अपनी बात कहने की अदा भी उन्हें ब्रेख्त के पास रखती है। महाराष्ट्र सरकार का एक पुरस्कार निदा ने इसलिए ठुकरा दिया था कि मंच पर गुजरात के मुख्यमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी भी मौजूद रहने वाले थे। जावेद अख्तर से उनके मतभेद इसीलिए हैं कि एक बार जावेद अख्तर भाजपा की सरकार का दिया हुआ पुरस्कार ले चुके हैं।अपने विचारों, अपनी नज्मों के कारण निदा ने भी बहुत दिन तक बाल ठाकरे का अघोषित प्रतिबंध झेला है। निदा में वो प्रतिभा थी कि बड़ी फिल्मों के गीत लिख सकें, पर इसी अघोषित प्रतिबंध के कारण कई फिल्में उनके हाथ से फिसल गईं। उनका फिल्मी करियर बहुत सफल नहीं कहा जा सकता। एक जमाने में उनके हाथ में रजिया सुल्तान जैसी बड़ी फिल्म थी। रजिया सुल्तान अपने कारणों से डूबी और निदा अपने कारणों से। फिर उनके हाथ बड़ी फिल्में नहीं लगीं। कुछ फिल्में तो उनकी ऐसी हैं, जिनका नाम भी लोगों ने नहीं सुना। अच्छा बताइए “लुबना” कब आई थी? या “अमीर आदमी गरीब आदमी”, “स्वीकार किया मैंने”, “कानून की आवाज” जैसी फिल्मों को कौन जानता है?जब ओशो रजनीश शरीर में थे, तब ओशो आश्रम एक खास पुरस्कार दिया करता था। यह पुरस्कार दिया जाता था उन लोगों को जो अपने विचारों, अपने कामों और अपनी शख्सियत को लेकर दुनिया में मिसफिट हैं। यह पुरस्कार जारी होता तो निदा को चार-पाँच बार मिल चुका होता। निदा फिल्मों में मिसफिट हैं, क्योंकि खुशामद नहीं कर सकते और किसी की बेवकूफी या अन्याय पर चुप नहीं रह सकते। मुशायरों में मिसफिट हैं, क्योंकि मुशायरा स्टेज पर पेश करना एक अलग ही आर्ट है और मंच पर बिना शायरी तो टिका जा सकता है पर “मुशायरागिरी” के बिना नहीं। दरअसल निदा अपने मन के शायर हैं …गजलें उन्होंने कही जरूर हैं, पर जिन विषयों पर वो शायरी करते हैं, वो विषय गजल का नहीं है। उनका असल शायर खुलता है उनकी अद्भुत नज्मों में जो आधुनिक अतुकांत हिन्दी कविता के ज्यादा नजदीक है, पर दिक्कत यह है कि हिन्दी वाले उन्हें उर्दू का शायर मानते हैं। उनके दोहे दिव्य हैं और कुछ दोहों में तो चमत्कार ही हुआ है।आइए अब फिर ब्रेख्त की बात करें। हिटलर ने जब बहुत से तत्कालीन लेखकों की किताबों को अपने खिलाफ पाकर बैन किया तो पता नहीं कैसे ब्रेख्त की किताब छूट गई। ब्रेख्त ने हिटलर को खत लिखा और कहा कि मैं भी आपके बहुत खिलाफ हूँ, मेरी भी किताबें आप बैन कीजिए, वरना इतिहास यही समझेगा कि मैं या तो आपके पक्ष में था या इतना महत्वपूर्ण नहीं था कि आप मेरी किताबें बैन करें। हिन्दुस्तान का ब्रेख्त निदा फाजली क्या अब भी वही तेवर रखता है? क्या अब भी उसे उस मंच से परहेज है, जहाँ मोदी या मोदी के समर्थक हों? …बदायूँ के शायर हसीब सोज़ का शेर है-

 यहाँ मजबूत से मजबूत लोहा टूट जाता है
कई झूठे इकट्ठे हों तो सच्चा टूट जाता है।

 तुर्ब इक्कीस बरस गुज़रे आज़ादी-ए-कामिल को,

तब जाके कहीं हम को ग़ालिब का ख़्याल आया ।

तुर्बत है कहाँ उसकी, मसकन था कहाँ उसका,

अब अपने सुख़न परवर ज़हनों में सवाल आया ।

 

सौ साल से जो तुर्बत चादर को तरसती थी,

अब उस पे अक़ीदत के फूलों की नुमाइश है ।

उर्दू के ताल्लुक से कुछ भेद नहीं खुलता,

यह जश्न, यह हंगामा, ख़िदमत है कि साज़िश है ।

जिन शहरों में गुज़री थी, ग़ालिब की नवा बरसों,

उन शहरों में अब उर्दू बे नाम-ओ-निशां ठहरी ।

आज़ादी-ए-कामिल का ऎलान हुआ जिस दिन,

मातूब जुबां ठहरी, गद्दार जुबां ठहरी ।

 

जिस अहद-ए-सियासत ने यह ज़िन्दा जुबां कुचली,

उस अहद-ए-सियासत को मरहूमों का ग़म क्यों है ।

ग़ालिब जिसे कहते हैं उर्दू ही का शायर था,

उर्दू पे सितम ढा कर ग़ालिब पे करम क्यों है ।

ये जश्न ये हंगामे, दिलचस्प खिलौने हैं,

कुछ लोगों की कोशिश है, कुछ लोग बहल जाएँ ।

जो वादा-ए-फ़रदा, पर अब टल नहीं सकते हैं,

मुमकिन है कि कुछ अर्सा, इस जश्न पर टल जाएँ ।

 

यह जश्न मुबारक हो, पर यह भी सदाकत है,

हम लोग हक़ीकत के अहसास से आरी हैं ।

गांधी हो कि ग़ालिब हो, इन्साफ़ की नज़रों में,

हम दोनों के क़ातिल हैं, दोनों के पुजारी हैं ।

 

त= क़ब्र; मसकन= निवासस्थान; वादा-ए-फ़रदा= कल के लिए किया गया वायदा

I was holidaying in India when the Israeli onslaught on Gaza began Dec. 27.

There were banner headlines coupled with editorial outrage in the Urdu media, the language of Muslims, and dispassionate but balanced coverage in the English media and the regional language newspapers.

Across the Arab Middle East, Al-Jazeera and others were providing one-sided, wall-to-wall coverage of death and destruction in Gaza.

Travelling through Europe, one could appreciate the powerful reporting and commentary, which conveyed the scale of the tragedy, without crossing the line into propaganda for either side.

It didn’t take long upon landing here to be reminded how much the political and media establishment – in the U.S. and, lately, Canada as well – are divorced from reality.

The Stephen Harper Conservatives, as well as many editorialists and pundits, seem to inhabit a make-believe world into which no inconvenient facts are allowed to intrude.

Their mantra is that Israel has a right to defend itself, has to protect its citizens from Hamas rockets, and had to retaliate for the breaking of the ceasefire by Hamas Dec. 19.

True. But deprived of other truths, this performs the desired magic of absolving Israel of any culpability.

According to this view, hundreds of Palestinian civilians, including women and children and seniors, being bombed and shelled to death in schools – even clearly marked United Nations schools – mosques, refugee camps, streets and homes are acceptable collateral damage.

Few tears need be shed, especially since Hamas is to blame, anyway.

There’s amnesia about the brutal 40-year-old occupation.

There’s nary a mention that in Israeli military operations in 2008, 420 Palestinians had been killed prior to Dec. 28 vs. five Israelis, according to B’Tselem, the Israeli human rights body,

And Israel’s crippling economic blockade had prompted the UN special rapporteur Richard Falk to say on Dec. 9 that Israel’s collective punishments amounted to “a crime against humanity,” and that the International Criminal Court ought to investigate whether Israeli leaders and military commanders should be indicted.

He noted that the last time there had been “such a flurry of denunciations by normally cautious UN officials” was during the reign of the apartheid government in South Africa.

On Nov. 21, the chief of UN Relief and Works Agency, Karen Abu Zayd, said supplies had run out. She reported “a chronic anemia problem” and “the stunting of children.”

All this was long before the latest carnage, which foreign journalists have been prevented from witnessing. Dead, as of yesterday, were 650 Gazans, a fifth of them civilians.

What our political and media establishment are telling us is this:

Israel must not be provoked but the Palestinians can be.

The trauma suffered by Israelis in the border area along Gaza is not acceptable. But 60 per cent of 1.5 million Gazans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder is.

Israeli politicians, facing an election Feb. 10, have to be sensitive to electoral concerns, but Palestinians elected in a fair election Jan. 2006 must be isolated and jailed.

There’s an equivalency between Hamas’s handmade, ill-targeted rockets and the lethal hi-tech Israeli arsenal, some of it of American origin.

Palestinians must pay heed to Israeli/American/Canadian demands but Israel may ignore calls for a ceasefire by the UN, the European Union and even allies France, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, etc.

Israeli lives matter, Arab ones don’t. In fact, it is worth prolonging the bloodshed in Gaza, as in Lebanon in 2006, to allow Israel time to achieve one or two more of its objectives. Arab blood is cheap.

“Unfortunately, all this plays into the hands of those Palestinians and Arabs, and more generally, Muslims, who say, `the West is against us because of who we are and is engaged in a civilizational war against us,’” says Jim Reilly, professor of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Toronto.

“If we include Iraq and Afghanistan, it reinforces the message of Al Qaeda and co-thinkers that they are waging war against a predatory and rapacious enemy.

“All this makes it that much harder for us to argue back against the militants and the zealots.”

 Newly elected US President’s first TV interview was to an Arabic channel, Al Arabia, apparently in his opening to Muslim world. The interview was re-telecast on CNN. Obama agreed with interviewer Hisham Melham, that in Muslim world, US was respected as it did not have a colonizing past. However, he said, it only within the span of last twenty to thirty years that US has been seen as antagonist to Arab and Muslim world.

Obama’s assertion (“we can no longer afford indifference to the suffering outside our borders”), along with one of Senator Dianne Feinstein’s (“the freedom of a people to choose its leaders is the root of liberty”) and Rev. Rick Warren’s prayer (“for every one of our freely elected leaders”) must have sounded hypocritical to Gazans.

They have been starved for electing Hamas in a free and fair election. They have seen official American indifference to their plight, even after the 23-day Israeli onslaught. About 1,300 are dead and 5,000 wounded, a majority of them civilians by some counts.

To dramatize his new approach to Muslims, Obama should consider going to Gaza as soon as possible.

Without having to meet Hamas, he could witness decomposed bodies still being pulled from the rubble of 5,000 homes reportedly destroyed. He could attend some of the funerals and hear the cries of Palestinians. He could sample the foul water from the broken mains.

P: No, there was a Hamas member of parliament on the next street but you put him in jail.

I: Must be old information, anyway, there’s going to be an airstrike so you better go.

P: Can you tell me where you’d like me to go to?

I: It’s not my business, check into a hotel, stay with relatives on the beach, take a vacation in Cyprus, just go.

P: I’ve been unemployed for a year because of your siege so I can’t afford a hotel right now.  My relatives just got bombed on the beach, in the Shati’ refugee camp.  And I can’t get out of Gaza because no one can leave.

I: Don’t blame me, I’m just warning you.

P: So, if there were a Hamas guy in my building, what would prevent me from going to warn him so he could escape the airstrike?

I: Hmm… we hadn’t thought of that.  I’ll make a note of it for my commanding officer.

P: Are you going to call everyone else in the building, or should I spread the word myself?

I: Do us a favor and tell the women and children.  We’re mostly concerned not to harm children.

P: You mean, like the 634 Palestinian minors killed by Israeli security personnel in Gaza since September 2000?

I: Maybe they weren’t civilians–we’re only concerned with civilian children.

P: As opposed to the terroristic children who attack you?

I: Hey, don’t make fun of the IDF, we’re a very sensitive army, we don’t take criticism well.

P: Sorry, it’s just that you haven’t been too concerned with children’s lives throughout this last ceasefire—you killed two teenagers on December 2.  I guess they were just “collateral damage” from a targeted assassination.

I: Hey, it’s tough to be surgical, but we do our best.  We don’t do what we call “Arab work”.  No offense.

P: While you’re being so helpful, can you tell me when you might turn the power back on in Gaza?

I: I have no information on that.

P: Any idea when we can get fuel for our cars?  Or medical supplies?  Or food and water?

I: Listen, there’s no humanitarian crisis in Gaza, don’t believe the Hamas propaganda.  Anyway, I’m only obeying orders, if it weren’t for me you would have been dead soon.

P: I still might be.

I: Yeah, but you can’t say I didn’t warn you.

P: I have to go now, I hear an F-16 overhead.

I: Right on schedule!  And remember to stay away from mosques, they’re usually stuffed full of explosives.

P: (Hangs up)
